Devil's Food Cake

Devil's Food Cake is one of Mak's favourite cakes. She had a recipe for it and mixed it from scratch. She didn't use Betty Crocker's cake mix. This is a rich chocolate cake which you can't stop eating. She used sour milk which she made by mixing milk with lime juice or vinegar, and used the scum.

The Industrial Shed 1890

A memorial monument stands in the parking lot of Penang General Hospital (GH Penang). It bears names of donors for building the hospital that once stood on the present site.

The initial old GH Penang was built from funds raised by the Penang community. It was not built from British Government funds. Among the donors who contributed towards the 'shed' in 1879 were Mahamed Joonos and Mahamed Ariff, who were probably close friends or related. The shed was built 11 years later in 1890. The Industrial Shed was presented by the King of Siam on 24 May 1890.

DONORS OF THE INDUSTRIAL SHED 1879-1890

The Toa Peh Kong Kongsee
The Ghee Hing Kongsee
Tan Beng Swee
Mess Noordin & Shaik Yousoof
Ghulam Meydin Merican
Dalbadal & Yahayah Merican
Pah Etam Kadir Hossain
Mahamed Joonoos & Mahamed Ariff
Meerah Pullay Kakah & Che Ismail
Shaik Ibram & Mahamed Fahar
Cauder Meydin & B Kader Saw
Shaik Ismail & Mahamed Hassan

What do all these information mean?

This 'Mahamed Joonos' could not be the father of Dr Che Lah. His father Md Joonos b Shaik Ahmad was a clerk. Dr Che Lah was born in 1903. His father Md Joonos would possibly be born circa 1873 (he would be only 6 years old in 1879, and 30 years old in 1903). Md Joonos would possibly be born circa 1878 (he would be only a year old in 1879, and 25 years old in 1903). Dr Che Lah's father was possibly born in 1873-1878. His father could not have donated since he was still a baby or a little boy during the duration of donation. Dr Che Lah's grandfather is Shaik Ahmad, and not Mahamed Joonos.

This 'Mahamed Joonos' would have to be at least 25-30 years old when he donated money in 1879 to build the industrial shed, and would have been born in 1849-1854. However, Shaik Ahmad possibly only arrived in Penang, Malaya circa 1860s. This possibly means there were 2 men named Mahamed/Mohamed/Md Joonoos in 1879-1890 when money was being collected to build the industrial. One was a baby or little boy and the other was mostly likely a successful young working adult.

This 'Mahamed Ariff' could not be Dr KM Ariff as he was born in 1893, 3 years after the industrial shed was built in 1890. His father Kadir Mastan was a Senior Interpreter at the Supreme Court in George Town, Penang. Kadir Mastan was possibly born in 1863-1868. He was probably 11-16 years old in 1879 at the time of donation to build the industrial shed. This means there was a wealthy businessman named Mahamed Ariff who donated in 1879 but he was not Dr Ariff nor his father Kadir Mastan.

There was a wealthy merchant in George Town named Mohamed Ariff bin Mohd Tajoodin, who lived at 156 Hutton Lane/Argyll Road, close to Masjid Jalan Hutton (mosque in Hutton Lane). Next to his house was Teh Bunga mansion, a yellow double-storey rich man's bungalow.

Tulip Che Lah (1) Birth Certificate 1931

BIRTH

1931 - Jumabee Tulip (born 4 November 1931) is the eldest daughter of Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos, an early Malay doctor. She was the eldest of 4 sisters by Dr Che Lah's first wife, Catherine Daisy de Coursey Bulner. She was known as Tulip to relatives and close friends, and as Tulip Che Lah (TCL) or Tulip Rashid (TR) to her students and colleagues.

This is my mother Tulip's birth certificate. I've tried my best to read the minute details and the cursive handwriting on the fragile photocopy. She was born on 4 November 1931 at Tanglin Hospital, the general hospital in Kuala Lumpur. She told me she was born a premature baby, and I believed her. WH Amour had registered her birth 6 days after she was born. Who was he? Why didn't her own father register his eldest daughter? Was he working outstation? Where did he work in November 1931? Why did her mother deliver at the general hospital? Who was attending to her mother? This copy of her birth certificate was obtained on 8 December 1931, about a month after she was born.

Gambar kereta Dato Penang kat rumah Maxwell Road ialah jenis Austin A135 Princess model 1950/51. Rolls Royce hanya sultan dan governor general boleh pakai masa dulu. Saiz & design Austin Princess tak jauh beza dgn RR. So Austin Princess ialah kereta tauke Cina KL dan orang kaya KL dulu. Jadi Dato Penang tergolong dalam group orang kaya zaman British. Abang ada ingat Mak ada beritahu nama kereta tu bukan Rolls Royce.

Dr Che Lah operated a private clinic in Glugor, Penang after retirement from Government service. His clinic was Glugor Klinik in Glugor on Jalan Glugor (now Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah). His clinic was rented out to Dr Teh, a dentist. The clinic still operates today as Glugor Klinik. The clinic is nearest the post-office in Glugor and close to Minah Restaurant.

==== MINDEN HEIGHTS, Penang 1971-1986 (till deceased) =====

Dr Che Lah's fourth and last residence was at 460-H, Minden Heights, Jalan 7. It was built in the 'poor man's row' circa 1970-71. The house was demolished.

The area was formerly part of Dato Jenaton's land and was a Malay village, with many Malay kampung houses. Minden Heights residential area was reorganized by Dr M. J. Che Lah and was developed by Guan Joo Seng. The front houses were for Malays and those at rear were for Chinese and Indians. The remainder were for bungalows. - from Kamaruddin Che Lah (24 May 2016)

Dr Che Lah had received a DJN award from Tun Datuk Dr Awang. These are the photos of that event. The printed date was November 1981. These photos could have been during the first 7 months (May 1981-November 1981) of Tun Datuk Dr Haji Awang being Governor.

=== GARDEN SWING ===
1958-2017

Dr Che Lah had a swing in his garden before I was born. The metal swing was painted silver, white or baby blue. As kids, my siblings and I used to sit on the swing.

He often spend time on the swing to talk to visitors. Tea was also served in the garden by the swing. The vine behind him is a Stephanotis, with fragrant tiny white flowers (often laid on wedding tables).

This was where I last sat in the garden to discuss things with my grandfather in 1985. He sat on the left and I sat on the right. We had fried bananas on a small metal table in front of the swing.

==== FLOWERS: ROSES & ORCHIDS ====
1960s-2017

Dr Che Lah and wife Mariah grew a lot of beautiful orchids. Here are some photos of their orchid collection in 2010. Many orchid plants were still flowering, even after years they have passed away. His wife occasionally sprayed a smelly malathion solution to kill bugs on the orchids.

==== DEMISE 1986 ====
23 January 1986

Dr Che Lah's grave (pusara) lies at Tanah Perkuburan Masjid Jamek Glugor, Penang. His grave is under a frangipani tree (pokok kemboja) close to the big old grave enclosure in front courtyard and near the main road.

Ceremony after 40 days of his demise, 6 March 1986.

This note was written in my father's 1986 diary:
Tahlil '40' hari arwah Dr. Hj. Che Lah
"Penyelia"

Khamis, 6 Mac 1986
25 Jamadilakhir 1406 Hijrah

==== ANCESTORS 1800s ====

Dr Che Lah would bring his family every Hari Raya Aidilfitri to visit his ancestors' graves at the Perak Road cemetery. They would leave the house very early while it was still dark.

The old graves had wooden tombstones (nisan kayu) but the inscriptions are now gone. So we don't know whose graves they are anymore.

Please let me know if you know the exact or approximate spot of the graves. Describe or use the grid below. Some say the graves are close to that of Makam Datuk Keramat, his forefather.
