Retired: 25 July 1945 (at 55), less than two months before the Japanese war ended in September 1945.
Deceased: 10 February 1952. Died at 2 am at home at 10 Jones Road, George Town, Penang.
Burial: Perak Road Muslim Cemetery, Penang

  1. He was a Malay interpreter in the Supreme Court, Penang, having joined the Service in June 1911 (aged 21)
  2. He was as a private in the S.S.V.F. in November 1912, attached to C (Malay) Company Third Battalion (P. and P.W.V.C.) - Penang and Province Wellesley Volunteer Corps.
  3. He was an official of numerous associations and societies in Penang.
  4. He joined as a Private, became a Lieutenant and finally a Captain of the Penang Malays Volunteer Corps. 
  5. He was awarded the M.B.E. in January 1939 for community services.
  6. He was the Chairman of the Malayan Volunteers Ex-Services Association, Penang branch in 1948.
  7. He was a recipient of the Jubilee Medal.

  • Thirty years of Volunteer services in Penang have brought their reward to Capt. Mohamed Noor bin Shaik Ahmad, who became a Member of the Order of the British Empire (Military Division) in the New Year's Honours List.
  • Malay interpreter at the Penang Supreme Court, he has been second in command of the Malay Company of the Penang and Province Wellesley Volunteer Corps since 1932.
  • It has been the proud boast of Malayan Volunteer forces that, like such famous regiments as the Honourable Artillery Rifles, those who aspire to hold commissions must serve first in the ranks.
  • Capt. Mohamed Noor has served in every rank from private to captain and has had some interesting periods of duty during times of emergency.
Out In Emergencies
  • When the German cruiser Emden visited Penang during the War, Capt. Mohamed Noor was a corporal in the Malay Company which occupied the defensive area at the cable station.
  • He escorted interned prisoners to Singapore, handing them over to the authorities at Tanglin Barracks.
  • During the "Rice Riots" in Penang in 1919 he was in charge of a platoon when the Volunteers were called out.
  • When the Prince of Wales visited Singapore in 1921, Capt. Mohamed Noor was a member of the Penang section of the guard of honour and he commanded the Malay detachment in the guard of honour furnished for the Duke of Gloucester, when His Royal Highness passed through Malaya on the Garter Mission to the Emperor of Japan.

For the forthcoming Francis Light Pageant at Penang on Tuesday, Aug. 11. Mr. J. M. Barron, Deputy Controller of Labour, Penang, will act the part of Capt. Francis Light and Capt. Mohamed Noor, of the Malay Company, will take the part of the Raja of Kedah for the signing of the agreement. The Rev. Colin King will be the herald. Over a hundred men from the Malay Volunteer Company will take part in the pageant, besides 40 men from the Police Force who will act as torch-bearers.

Captain Md Noor's 6 children from his first wife (Che Wan Teh bt Md Ariff) are:
  1. Zainab Bee bt Mohd Noor. Zainab Bee was the eldest child of Cpt. S. A. Mohd. Noor from his first wife, Wan Teh. Zainab Bee married to Abdul Wahab bin Hj Yassin. They moved to Kedah after marriage. Abdul Wahab worked with the PWD as a draughtsman (pelukis pelan rumah). They had 8 children but one was stillborn: 1. Abdul Mutalib, 2. Mohd. Ismail, 3. Osman Harris, 4. Bibah, 5. Noriah, 6. Stillborn boy, 7. Nurfadhilah, and 8. Norain. Abdul Wahab bin Haji Yassin passed away on 19 December 1970. Zainab Bee bt S.A. Mohd Noor passed away on 24 December 1976. FAWaZ stands for the Family of Abdul Wahab and Zainab Bee. FAWaZ organises annual family gathering. FAWaZ also manages a homestay.
  2. Hayati Meah bin Mohd Noor. Hayati Meah married Fatimah Chung (@ Chung How Teen @ Aunty Betty). I met both Uncle Hayati Meah and Aunty Betty when they visited Dr Che Lah at his home at 355-A Lengkok Pemancar, where Dr Che Lah had a puppy named Betty. We were out on the lawn at the back of the house, near the rear dog kennel. (Tok) Uncle Hayati Meah had 2 children - Zainudin and Zurina.
  3. Zahora Bee bt Mohd Noor. Zahora Bee married to Abu Hassan bin Omar. Abu Hassan is Aunty Besar's son. He joined the British Army and was stationed at Pulau Blakangmati in Singapore. He was Sargeant Abu Hassan bin Omar. Their daughter is Datuk Faridah Abu Hassan (@ Anum) and their adopted son is Farouk Abu Hassan (deceased). Farouk had worked on construction of the East-West Highway joining Jeli to Gerik. He died of malaria. Aunty Esther recalled Faridah Abu Hassan was a little girl then known as Fairy. Aunty Besar and Dr Che Lah are siblings and Cpt Md Noor was their youngest paternal uncle. Zainab Bee, Hayati Meah, Zahora Bee, Mohd Ismail, Abdul Rahim and Abdul Kadir are Dr Che Lah's first cousins. Abu Hassan and Aunty Esther Schokman are second cousins. Faridah Abu Hassan and Jeffrey Schokman are third cousins. Datuk Faridah Abu Hassan married to Mohamed and they have 2 sons: 1. Razeef and 2. Rafeez Mohamed.
