Family Reunion 1974

My grandfather often organised family reunions for his birthdays, either at home, at hotels or by the beach. I have never been to any of the functions as I was either in college or studying overseas. My elder sister Sharifah narrated stories of how happy everyone was and all the joy they had. The photos tell everything.

Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos - London 1953

1950: Dr Che Lah toured England/Europe alone in 1950 after completing his postgraduate studies in Singapore.

1953: Dr Che Lah was probably spending his honeymoon with his second wife in late 1953.
Tulip toured Europe with a batch of her Kirkby students in late 1953.
Tulip accompanied her father and step-mother (Mariah) on their Liverpool tour in 1953.

I have two picture postcards (ppc) from my mother. She wrote to her father when they were both overseas in 1953. She was attending the Malayan Teachers' Training College at Kirkby, near Liverpool (2nd batch, 1952-1954). She was 21+ (she would be 22 in November 1953).

Tulip's father was probably enjoying his honeymoon in England and continental Europe in late 1953.

Her father was about to be remarried when Tulip was about to leave for England in early 1952. His second wife was a Hokkien nurse from Kuala Lumpur who worked at Bangsar Hospital, named Mary Chong Nyet Lin @ Mariah bt Abdullah. He was 49+ and she was 36.

Mariah came aboard the ship to bid farewell to Tulip before Tulip sailed to England. I saw the photo of them with the ship's bell. The photo has gone missing. The ship was Carthage.

In England, Dr Che Lah and his wife stayed at 55 Courtfield Gardens, London, S.W.5, England. The couple then visited continental Europe in late 1953.

Merican & Noordin Merican People

There were 2 brothers, Kadir Merican and Noordin Merican, who were the grandsons of Dato Kramat in Penang. Descendants of the elder brother kept the Merican suffix in their names. Likewise, descendants of the younger brother kept the Noordin Merican suffix in their names.

------
There was a classmate named Khalid Merican in my Form 6 class at the Methodist Boys' School (MBS) in Penang in 1976.

MBS was formerly the Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) in Penang, but was at different locations before it was re-located to Jalan Ayer Itam.

------
Mak had friends and relatives who had the Merican suffix in their names. Among her relatives was a man by the call name Ayah Wan Merican Nordin (deceased). He knew Mak, but I never knew him except in Facebook, and never met him.
