Azizah Begum bt Habib Noohu

I first met Azizah Begum bt Habib Noohu at HUSM in Kelantan in September 1983 when I first worked there. We both had our first daughters at the hospital on the same day, 26 April 1984. Our daughters also have similar names.

Azizah is my mother's relative but I don't know how we are related. She said we are also related to the famed saint in Singapore, Habib Noh al-Habshi.

I'm still finding out how we are related, and how we are related to Habib Noh al-Habshi. I have not been to Maqam Habib Noh in Singapore. Bapak's ancestor's mosque, Masjid Hj Muhammad Salleh (@ Nakhoda nan Intan) lies at the foothill of the Maqam. The two great men were good friends.

Azizah has moved from USM in Penang to a university in Pahang. I have her details somewhere.

Origin. Shaik Ahmad came from Hyderabad, Deccan Plateau in central India. He was originally from the northern region, ie the Sindh region of Bengal in Undivided India (now Pakistan). His village in the Sindh region is unknown. His re-settlement village in Hyderabad is also unknown. No family ties in India or Pakistan is known to date.

Migration. He came to Malaya along with the British East India Army that was sent to Malaya. His date of arrival in Penang is unknown. His approximate date of arrival in Butterworth or Penang island would be between 1820s and mid-1850s.

Penang, S.S. In Malaya, Shaik Ahmad was probably first stationed at Butterworth. Then Shaik Ahmad was appointed to work for "Governor Brown" or Messrs. Brown in Gelugor on Penang island. His youngest son Mohamed Noor was born in 1890 at Glugor. Their village was a Malay seaside village named Kg Sg Gelugor. This village is still extant, but new modern homes have replaced the old wooden kampung houses which were still there in 1952.

Occupation. Shaik Ahmad was one of two Indian army men who were sent to work for "Governor Brown" of Penang island. His relatives said he was either a tailor or a dhobi. The other army man is unknown.

    Ageing

I have discovered yesterday and the day before that I have become old. Now that I am old, I have fewer friends but beautiful ones. They are my precious friends. Now that I am old, I have more money than I need. I don't need a lot of things I needed before. I don't need to buy baby milk formula, nappies, baby lotion and soap, baby clothes, and baby food. I am a lot richer in my old age when I was poor when I was trying to grow my family. So I am happy that I am old to see how far I have come in my life. I don't need new glasses anymore; I can see Quran very clearly without my glasses. So I am happy now that I am old. The kids at TESCO called me "Nenek" and I am happy with that. It feels really great to be able to live this long and live peacefully without worries. Nothing beats the joy this life brings to me. I'm happy as the days go by. ALHAMDULILLAH.

    Aunty Chom's Family

Aunty Chom married to Pak Cik Joonos bin Ali Baba. They have three children:

    1. Jasri (Boy; DOB 9 December)
    2. Aizat (Boboy)
    3. Aizura

I met Pak Cik Joonos (he was called Yunus) at Datuk Penang's house up on the hill at 355-A Lengkok Pemancar in Penang, ever since I was a small girl (aged 5). He was a tall and thin boy.

I met Aunty Chom at her mother's house in Tanjung Bungah when they organised lunch. She is Kalsom bt Shaik Emam.

I met Jasri twice - once while having breakfast at Impiana KLCC in KL, and another time when he held a display booth at Universiti Sains Malaysia, at Dewan Utama in Kelantan. I took two photos.

I asked Jasri about where our ancestors' graves are located. He mentioned that they are sited at the Jalan Perak Cemetery and close to Makam Dato Keramat.

Jasri and Aunty Chom helped me with Datuk Penang's biography and photographs for my book, Biography of the Early Malay Doctors 1900-1957 Malaya and Singapore. I am thankful to both of them.

    A Poem For Old Ladies

bila kita muda, orang suka sebab cantik
bila kita tua krepot, orang tak suka
    maka kita puasa sorang diri
    buka puasa sorang diri

bila kita tua semua orang lari jauh
takut esok kita terlantar nak kena jaga
anak-anak pun takut sebab ibu dah tua
    ibu tua ditinggalkan sorang diri

    kesian ibu tua
    dia tiada tempat bergantung
    dia tiada pension atau insurans
maka tinggallah ibu tua sorang diri

    malang nasib jadi ibu tua
panjang pendek usia bukan pilihan dia
    tapi Allah yang tetapka usia
ibu tua tak mahu dihup sorang sepi

    kesian ibu tua
    tak de yang kisah pun
    take yang singgah tengok
apa makanan dia untuk buka puasa

    anak-anak zaman skrg mcm tu
    ibu tua ditinggalkan sorang diri
    kesian ibu tua
    nak berjalan pun tak larat

    WHAT THE HECK!
suami ada tapi tak mengaku suami!!!
    apa dah jadi?
    kesian ibu tua

    tinggal sepi makan hati
dalam diam ibu tua akan pergi SLOWLY ...
    membawa seribu cerita
ke hadapan Allah di kemudian hari

    ini kah dikatakan zaman MODERN?
gaya hidup pilihan TOUCH N GO!
    kesian ibu tua
    dia tak tau dia ditinggalkan

    OH, NO! Ibu tua!!
    You got to fight back
    this disease in men
they think they can just walk out the door

    Yes, ibu tua
Next time, you lock the door in their face
And see their muka masam purik
Padan muka tinggalkan bini lagu ni

    Ini cerita dari pondok
    manusia boleh tipu bini
tapi ingat, listen listen listen ...
ALLAH KNOWS WHAT YOU DID LAST NIGHT!

I also know what you did last Raya ... berdengkur!

    Aunty June's Family

I met Aunty June once when she was walking past me at Pak Saleh's house in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. I was seated against the wall and she and her sisters and their families walked past me. I thought they were important people (VIP) as they didn't look anything like me. I had thought they were Orang Puteh but later I found out they were Burghers.

    My Cousins

I have 15 cousins, 8 are residing in Malaysia and 7 are in Australia.

I have met most of my cousins except for a few.

I met most of my cousins at Faisal's wedding reception in Bertam, Penang on 2 July 2013. Faisal's wedding reception was held at the MPSK Bertam, a big sports complex.

It will be good to meet everyone for the first time.

I met uncle Din's son, Kamarul Faisal, once at his home in Seberang Prai, a second time when Bapak died, and a third time when he got married - at his wedding reception in Bertam.

So far, I met one of aunty Esther's 2 children - I met Jeffrey but not his younger sister Veronica. I met Jeffrey first at Impiana KLCC, and second time at Faisal's wedding reception in Bertam.

I have not met any of aunty June's 5 children - Stephanie Druscilla, Gerald, Rex Allan, Vanessa Gloria, and Amanda Zoe. None of them came to Faisal's wedding reception.

I have met aunty Daisy's 7 children in Balga, Western Australia. I first met them when uncle Robert was still alive in 1988, long before Christmas. I met them again after uncle Robert died just before Christmas 1988. I met them again at Faisal's wedding reception in Bertam on 2 June 2013.

    Family Reunion 2013

When our family members met at Uncle Din's son's wedding at Majlis Perbandaran Sukan & Kebudayaan (MPSK) in Bertam, it was a wonderful affair. I never imagined I would meet everyone again.

I met uncle Din and family - wife Intan and son Kamarul Faisal.

I met aunty Intan's two sisters - aunty Chom and aunty Latifah (Prof Nor Hayati's friend).

I also met aunty Chom's only daughter, Aizura. I didn't see or recognise aunty Chom's 2 sons - Boy and Boboy.

I met aunty Esther and aunty Daisy, and their children.

I met aunty Esther's son Jeffrey and his family - wife Siti Noor Azar Majid, and daughter Nur Hanis and her friend.

I met aunty Daisy's daughters - Frances, Jenny and Vicky, and Vicky's husband and son.

    Faisal's Wedding

Affandi and I visited Aunty Intan at home in Seberang Prai. Uncle Din was away. Aunty Intan informed us about her son Faisal's upcoming wedding in June 2013. I can't recall the date, maybe 2 June 2013. Aunty Intan sent the invitation card to my sister Pah's house in Penang. I forgot to ask Pah about the card and date of the intended wedding. I have to write it in my time-table or I will forget altogether.

    Taiping's First Galleria

Affandi and I visited the First Galleria in Taiping on 2 March 2013. The First Galleria is housed in a renovated and restored colonial building at the edge of Taiping town, at the corner of the playing field of the King Edward VII School. Jalan Ong Saik runs by the First Galleria. Jalan Stesen ends at First Galleria.

First Galleria is cared for by Anuar Isa, its Senior Curator. He obtained at least RM2 million in funds to restore the colonial building. It is now a great classical colonial building belonging to Majlis Perbandaran Taiping.

Anuar Isa plans to hold a 3-month exhibition on The Early Malay Doctors at the First Galleria in Taiping. He plans to invite Tun Dr Mahathir and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah to officiate the exhibition some time between 1 and 10 July 2013. However, this event has to be postponed as Tun Dr Mahathir will be overseas from 6 June 2013 onward. The exhibition may be re-schelduled to October 2013. Anuar Isa will update in Facebook and I will update here.

I would like to invite all Shaik Ahmad clan members to visit the exhibition on The Early Malay Doctors at the First Galleria when it opens to the public. One of the proposed 43 posters on display will be that of Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos. Come one come all.
