Family of Mohd Joonos bin Shaik Ahmad


First Generation (G1) Hyderabad, India

Personal demographic. His name is Shaik Ahmad. No surname is known. His date of birth and demise are unknown. He was probably born circa 1840 in Sindh region in Bengal, Undivided India. His parents and siblings are unknown.

Origin. Shaik Ahmad came from Hyderabad, Deccan Plateau in central India. He was originally from the northern region, ie the Sindh region of Bengal in Undivided India (now Pakistan). His village in the Sindh region is unknown. His re-settlement village in Hyderabad is also unknown. No family ties in India or Pakistan is known to date.

Migration. He came to Malaya along with the British East India Army that was sent to Malaya. His date of arrival in Penang is unknown. His approximate date of arrival in Butterworth or Penang island would be between 1820s and mid-1850s.

Penang, S.S. In Malaya, Shaik Ahmad was probably first stationed at Butterworth. Then Shaik Ahmad was appointed to work for "Governor Brown" or Messrs. Brown in Gelugor on Penang island. His youngest son Mohamed Noor was born in 1890 at Glugor. Their village was a Malay seaside village named Kg Sg Gelugor. This village is still extant, but new modern homes have replaced the old wooden kampung houses which were still there in 1952.

Occupation. Shaik Ahmad was one of two Indian army men who were sent to work for "Governor Brown" of Penang island. His relatives said he was either a tailor or a dhobi. The other army man is unknown.

Shaik Ahmad could have worked for someone before Messrs. J. G. Brown (1894-September 1926), who was the General Manager of Brown, Phillips and Stewart company based in Penang.

Union. Shaik Ahmad married Hajar, a Kedah Malay. His date of marriage is unknown. His date of marriage could be circa 1865. Hajar was possibly aged 17 when she married. She may have been born in 1848. They had six children (three sons and three daughters) (G2). 

The family moved from Butterworth to re-settle on Penang island, where he worked for "Governor Brown" in Glugor.

Shaik Ahmad's 6 children were:-
  1. Hamidah Bee bt Shaik Ahmad (born circa 1866)
  2. Jan Bee bt Shaik Ahmad (born circa 1871)
  3. Mohd Joonos bin Shaik Ahmad (born circa 1876)
  4. Mohd Ali bin Shaik Ahmad (born circa 1881)
  5. Mariam (Bee) bt Shaik Ahmad (born circa 1885), and
  6. Captain Md Noor bin Shaikh Ahmad (born 1890 in Glugor).

    Second Generation (G2) Glugor, Penang
    1. Hamidah Bee bt Shaik Ahmad 
    2. Jan Bee bt Shaik Ahmad
    3. Mohd Joonos bin Shaik Ahmad
    4. Mohd Ali bin Shaik Ahmad 
    5. Mariam (Bee) bt Shaik Ahmad, and
    6. Captain Md Noor bin Shaik Ahmad. He was a Malay Interpreter in the Supreme Court in George Town, Penang.

    Mohd Joonos bin Shaik Ahmad was a clerk. Mohd Joonos married Juma Bee bt Kassim. His date of marriage is unknown. Mohd Joonos probably married circa 1900.

    Juma Bee bt Kassim was probably from Kg Dodol in Perak Road, Penang. 

    According to arwah Wan Nasserudin, Juma Bee bt Kassim was probably a descendant of Datuk Keramat and related to Cauder Mydin. 

    Datuk Keramat could refer to Habib Noh 's siblings or his descendants.

    Juma Bee bt Kassim was related to Cauder Mydin's younger brother, Noordin Merican.

    Dr Che Lah's relatives are all buried at the Perak Road cemetery. Dr Che Lah's family visited the graves annually after Solat Aidilfitri.

    Md Joonos bin Shaik Ahmad and Juma Bee bt Kassim had five children (a daughter and four sons) - Mak Besar Bee @ Che Bee bt Md Joonos, Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos, Ali Baba bin Md Joonos, Osman bin Md Joonos and Mohamad bin Md Joonos.

    Third Generation (G3) Glugor, Penang

    1) Mak Besar Bee @ Che Bee bt Md Joonos (born circa 1901, eldest sister of Dr Che Lah),
    2) Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos (born 10 December 1903, eldest of 4 brothers),
    3) Ali Baba bin Md Joonos (born 1919),
    4) Osman bin Md Joonos (born circa 1921) and,
    5) Mohamad bin Md Joonos (born circa 1923).

    • Mak Besar Bee @ Che Bee bt Md Joonos married Cikgu Omar bin Nasaruddin
    • Dr Che Lah married twice
    • Dr Che Lah’s younger brother, Ali Baba married Bee Bee Johara bt Mohd Jalaludin and they had 11 children. One of his sons is Pak Cik Joonos (Yunos) who married Aunty Chom.
    • Osman was a train engine driver during the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960). He was an albino and had blue eyes and fair skin.
    • Nothing is known about the youngest brother, Mohamad.
    Mak Besar Bee @ Che Bee bt Md Joonos (Aunty Besar) is at far left. Some of the girls are her daughters. Dr Che Lah's two daughters are Esther and June. On the ship Carthage at Port Swettenham in Klang in 1952, for Tulip's voyage to England.

    Mr Frederick William Bulner (F. W. Bulner, with hat) is standing at far left. Dr Che Lah's first wife Daisy Katherine De Courcy Bulner and their 4 daughters and his adopted son are in this photo. This photo was probably taken by Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos. His eldest daughter Tulip was going to Kirkby, England, for her studies in Teacher Training in 1952.

    Fourth Generation (G4)

    Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos bin Shaik Ahmad married twice to non-Malays.

    First marriage. Dr Che Lah first married a Ceylon Burgher trainee nurse who studied at the General Hospital Kuala Lumpur, named Maimunah bt Abdullah @ Daisy Katherine De Courcy Bulner in early 1931. Katherine was born on 5 March 1911 in Kandy, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and came to Malaya as a 7-year old girl with her parents. Her 5 other siblings were born in Malaya.

    The Straits Times of 24 July 1933 reported Dr and Mrs Che Lah had attended a concert held at the Anglo-Chinese School in Klang on 17 July 1933. The concert was for raising the building fund for the ACS at Kapar, Selangor. Others who were present at the concert were Mr L. Forbes (District Officer, Klang), Che Osman (Magistrate, Klang), Inche Mohd Salleh (District Office, Kuala Langat), Dr and Mrs Farris, and Dr A. Visuvalingam. According to Esther, her father Dr Che Lah remained with Katherine till after the war (1948). They divorced after the war, in 1948/49.

    Second marriage. Dr Che Lah then married a Hospital Bangsar nurse, Mariah @ Mary Chong Nyet Lin in 1953. She was Hokkien Chinese and was popularly known as Matron Mariah or just Matron, and was addressed as Madam Chong on envelopes received at her home at 355-A Lengkok Pemancar, Glugor, Penang in the 1960s.

    Children. Dr Che Lah had four daughters by Daisy Katherine De Courcy Bulner and a son by Mariah. He adopted two more babies. He adopted a Eurasian infant named Philip @ Mohd Noor from a Singapore orphanage and raised him at Sungai Buloh during the war. After the Malayan Independence, Dr Che Lah adopted a Chinese newborn as his own daughter.

    4. Daisy Yvette (born Wednesday, 17 July 1935)  - lives in Western Australia
    5. Philip @ Mohd Noor (born 1944- deceased 1970s); adopted son
    6. Kamaruddin bin Che Lah (born 1 February 1955) - lives in Seberang Prai, Penang
    7. Kamariah (born 30 June 1959); adopted daughter - lives in Greenwood, Gombak, Selangor

    Fifth Generation (G5)

    Jumabee Tulip bt Che Lah married to Haji Abdul Rashid bin Mohd Yusope (28 Nov 1931-8 March 2009). They have seven children – Mohd Sharif (deceased 19 July 2017), Sharifah (deceased 19 December 2017), Faridah (Kubang Kerian, Kelantan), Rabi’ah (Jengka Pusat, Pahang), Mohd Farid (deceased 2 December 2015), Mohd Amin (Kg Pandan/Cheras, KL) and Aminah (KL).

    Sixth Generation (G6)

    Mohd Sharif bin Abdul Rashid (29 Oct 1956-19 July 2017) married Siti Fatimah bt Jaafar. They have 4 children - Siti Aishah, Mohd Hafez, Siti Husna and Mohd Daniel. All his children are married and have families.

    Sharifah bt Abdul Rashid (24 Oct 1957-19 Dec 2017) never married. She was previously working at CAP in Penang. She retired and left Penang to live with her sister Rabi'ah in Jengka Pusat, Pahang. She then went to live in Rawang with her eldest brother. After he died, she moved to an old folks home in Rawang and then to another old folks home in Ampang, KL. She was admitted to Hospital Ampang where she later died in the ICU. She is interred at Bukit Kg Cheras Baru in KL.

    Faridah bt Abdul Rashid married to Affandi Hussien. They have 6 children - Nuraishah Bazilah (married on 26 Nov 2009), Muhammad Azfar Hakim, Muhammad Ibrahim Adzim, Dr Nurfarahiyah Nasuha @ Dr Farah Wong (getting married in 2022), Nuramira Suraiya (married on 21 Jan 2021) and Yusrina Faqihah.

    Rabi'ah bt Abdul Rashid married to Ramli bin Abdul Hamid (deceased 2015). They have 5 children - Mohd Na'im (married Ustazah Zakiah), Azizah (married Ustaz Lutfi), Mohsin (married in 2021), Dr Alia Farhana and Mohd Hanif (married). Rabi'ah retired as a schoolteacher in 2017. She lives in Jengka Pusat, Pahang.

    Muhammad Farid bin Abdul Rashid (7 Feb 1961-2 Dec 2015) married Kamariah bt Bujang. They have 5 children - Muhammad Afiq (married), Adibah Huda (married Hafiz), Hanisah Huda, Syafiah Aqila Huda (married Ismail), and Muhammad Bazil Aiman. Adibah and Hafiz have 2 sons. Syafiah has a child.

    Muhammad Amin bin Abdul Rashid married Zainah Aris. They have 4 children - Muhammad Qusyairi (married Siti Zainab), Muhammad Ashraf (married), Bazilah Amira, and Muhammad Hilmi. Qusyairi & Zainab have a daughter.

    Aminah bt Abdul Rashid married to Muhammad Shahrul Nizam bin Abdullah Satar. They have 4 children - Nur Sakinah, Muhammad Zulfakar, Nur Nabilah, and Nur Nabihah. Muhammad Shahrul Nizam is the grandson of an early Malay dentist, Dr Mohamed bin Taib of Pahang.

    There are 12 children in the 7th generation.

    All of Sharif's 4 children are married and have families - 7 kids

    Faridah's eldest daughter and third daughter are married.

    Rabi'ah's 3 sons are married. The eldest has 3 kids.

    Farid's 3 children married  and they have 3 kids.

    Amin's 2 sons are married with 2 kids.
